. In the search box on my Kindle I typed in faith and a book entitled, George Muller of Bristol and His Witness to a Prayer-Hearing God popped up. During the 1800’s Mr. Muller was an ordinary man who led a life full of sin until he found GOD. After that he devoted his entire life doing GOD’s work. By 1875 he had founded 5 large orphanages, in Bristol, England, which housed over 10,000 street children. Being poor, he never asked anyone for money but relied solely on GOD to provide all the needs for the orphans and his staff. Throughout his entire life he trusted in GOD to meet his every need and he never once went into debt. He felt that GOD gave his faithful followers the right to ask and claim. He believed that if he never lost sight of GOD’s promises, GOD would answer his every plea because GOD could not deny HIMSELF. Mr. Muller also believed that you are nothing and can do nothing without GOD. I know that GOD led me to this book because it changed how I live my life today.Product details

Much more detail than Mullers own narrative.Reading this book led to the autobiographies of Hermann Franke,( who lived in the late 1600's and inspired Muller to do as he did), and John Newton, and George Whitefield. Muller made it a habit to only read the Bible , but he did read of these men, whose lives witnessed the movings of the God of Israel in other ways than his own experience.
Charles Dickens, who wrote of poverty and need, was given a tour of the houses because of a rumour that the children were starving.
This was the age of the workhouses in Great Britain that Dickens descibes in Oliver Twist. Unrelated, but interesting, Muller seperated from denominations and accepted no salary from the church he pastored. He also broke ties with the Plymouth Brethren and his personal friend John Nelson Darby over the teachings which became dispensationalism.
I like to read this book in little sips, a paragraph or a page in a day, and have gone through it twice in this fashion. I can't tell you the huge numbers of topics that are addressed that have had impact in my life personally Mueller's reverence for the Bible, his way of seeking God's will, his incredible salvation story, his desire to care for widows and orphans, his complete humility (after he died it was learned he had donated thousands of pounds to the works of his own money), his profound diligence in prayer. And despite the fact that he seems perfect to the reader, we are encouragingly reassured that he was not. He never ceased his battle with sin, but gave fight to the very end.
I'm looking forward to talking with him in heaven, but even more I'm looking forward to being with his Lord.
George Muller is one of those rare individuals whose life ought to be studied by any and every Christian, both for its evidence of God's amazing grace and its lessons about personal piety. He was a great man of prayer and a great man of God. But like, for instance, Richard Baxter, there are things to be emulated and things to be avoided. But this book is as undiscerningly hagiographic as anything I have ever read. Muller's baby with the bathwater discarding of the past with very little understanding of historical theology is not something that needs to be emulated. Pierson's undiscerning approval of that atavistic, anti-intellectual aspect of Protestant history and habit gets harder and harder to swallow as you read through the book.
When living overseas some years ago, I first heard a story about George Muller’s faith. In this text, I learned so much more. George Muller was an ordinary man with a truly extraordinary story. While a youth, he struggled and succumbed to typical teenage temptations. To add to such failings, he was perhaps the greatest con artist of his day. Yet, God miraculously saved him and brought much more fruit out of George Muller’s life than is commonly seen in those who grow up in much better circumstances. His love for the Scriptures and prayer, along with the unshakable faith that grew out of related habits, are a model for all who follow Jesus throughout our world today. His integrity, which led him to even reject monetary gifts of questionable origin or intent, is something rarely found in modern times. Oh Lord, help us to have teachable hearts willing to learn from such spiritual ancestors as George Muller. Enable us to see that it is only by living in a simple, biblical manner that we can experience Your mighty work as George Muller did in his lifetime.
My review is the same for every George Mueller book!
I usually just read a book through once quite quickly and then put it back on the shelf with all the others. I read the George Mueller books slowly and stop frequently to savor and absorb the miracles that God has performed. I love the consistent trust that Mr. Mueller exhibits in the certainty that God is going to come through, even when He delays to the nth last minute. And sure enough as the days, weeks, months, years and decades pass his trust is never misplaced. Our Wonderful Provider never fails or embarrasses him. Whether it is hundreds or thousands of orphans that need to be fed that day, the provision is always complete. My own faith for financial help from my Heavenly Father has been transformed and my ability to receive and give has undergone a huge transformation. I have 3 Mueller books and they have been read two and three times slowly, methodically and lovingly. There seems to be an "impartation" one receives and that is exactly Mr. Mueller's hope and purpose in keeping these journals and publishing them.
